BMW Ghost Compatibility Changes by Generation

The useful question is not simply “Does Ghost fit BMW?” It is “Which Autowatch Ghost product is currently listed for this exact BMW generation?”

Autowatch's live compatibility database currently shows Ghost-II across many BMW platforms, including various 3 Series/M3, 4 Series/M4, older 5 Series/M5, 8 Series and pre-facelift X5/X6/X7 generations. It also shows Ghost Pro for a number of newer platforms such as the current G90/G99 M5, G60 5 Series/i5, X5 LCI, X6 LCI and X7 LCI.

That is why this page targets BMW Ghost Immobiliser as the search intent without pretending one product generation fits every BMW. Luke checks the exact model/year before booking.

Compatibility rule: model badges alone are not enough. An X5, M5 or 5 Series can span several different electronic generations, so current manufacturer compatibility should be checked each time.

Performance BMWs, X Models and Everyday Series Cars

Luke supplied this BMW list from Track & Tune's real workload. Each group has different generations, so the final system choice is based on the exact vehicle rather than the name alone.

BMW M3 Competition

High-performance 3 Series-based models should be checked by exact generation and model year before an immobiliser or layered security package is confirmed.

M3 Competition • saloon / Touring where applicable

BMW M4 Competition

Autowatch lists multiple 4 Series/M4 generations in its compatibility database, including F-series and G-series platforms.

M4 Competition • Coupé • Convertible variants

BMW M5

Autowatch currently distinguishes older M5/5 Series generations from the newer G90/G99 M5, which is listed for Ghost Pro.

M5 • previous generations • current G90/G99 generation

BMW M8

M8 sits within BMW's high-performance 8 Series family. Exact compatibility must be checked against the current Autowatch database before fitting.

BMW X3 M Competition

X3 generations currently span different Autowatch product listings, including Ghost-II on G01-era vehicles and newer product generations on later platforms.

X3 M Competition • X3 performance SUV

BMW X5 M Competition

BMW's X5 family spans E70, F15/F85 and G05-era vehicles, with newer facelift models requiring a fresh compatibility check.

X5 M Competition • X5

X6 M Competition • X6

BMW X7

The X7 G07 family includes pre-LCI and LCI vehicles with different current Ghost-family listings.

X7 • G07 generation

3, 4 and 5 Series security

BMW 3 Series, 4 Series and 5 Series Security

These model families cover a broad range of saloons, estates, coupés, convertibles, performance derivatives, hybrids and newer electrified platforms. Treating them as one technical generation would be inaccurate.

BMW 3 Series

Autowatch currently lists multiple 3 Series/M3 generations for Ghost-II, including older E-series, F-series and G20/G21-era vehicles. Always check the exact year.

3 Series • M3 • Saloon • Touring

BMW 4 Series

Autowatch lists F32/F33/F36/F82 and G22/G23/G82/G83-era 4 Series/M4 applications for Ghost-II in its current compatibility data.

How Ghost works on a compatible BMW

Separate Driver Authorisation Beyond the Factory Key

Autowatch Ghost uses supported factory controls as a hidden keypad, requiring a private disarm sequence before the vehicle can be driven.

Ghost-II is described by Autowatch as a covert CAN-bus immobiliser. Normal PIN operation does not depend on a separate RF Ghost key fob. The driver enters a changeable sequence using existing vehicle buttons, and Service/Valet mode is available when the car is handed to a workshop.

  • Changeable driver-entered disarm sequence.
  • Uses supported existing vehicle controls rather than a visible keypad.
  • No separate RF fob required for normal Ghost-II PIN operation.
  • Service/Valet mode for workshop or servicing situations.
  • Compatibility checked against the specific BMW generation before installation.

BMW Digital Key, Comfort Access and Additional Security Layers

Modern BMW access technology varies by model and equipment. BMW currently offers Digital Key and Digital Key Plus on selected models, including several vehicles Luke regularly works with.

BMW's current Digital Key compatibility information includes newer 5 Series/i5, M5, iX, X5/X5 M, X6/X6 M and X7 models among vehicles that can support Digital Key Plus with the relevant Comfort Access equipment. BMW says compatible phones or smartwatches can be used to lock, unlock and start supported vehicles.

That factory convenience does not remove the need to think about the wider security objective. A compatible aftermarket immobiliser, tracker or alarm is a separate security layer and should be selected around the exact BMW and how it is used.

BMW tracking options

BMW Offers Its Own S5 and S7 Security Trackers — So Compare the Requirement Properly

BMW UK currently advertises BMW Security Active S7, BMW Security Active S5 and BMW Security Pro S5 systems. This matters because a customer asking for “BMW security” may actually be comparing factory/dealer tracking with aftermarket Meta Trak, EcoTrak, Scorpion or immobiliser options.

BMW describes its Active S7 as a hard-wired GPS tracking system with app/SMS alerts and Secure Operating Centre support. BMW Active S5 adds a driver tag, while BMW Security Pro S5 adds an engine-lock function that can be activated through its operating-centre process after theft is reported and police approval is obtained.

Track & Tune also installs third-party S5/S7 tracking solutions. The correct choice depends on the exact insurer wording, required features, subscription structure and customer preference.

Insurance: if your policy specifies S5, S7 or another particular standard, confirm the exact requirement before booking. Thatcham certification does not automatically guarantee acceptance by every insurer.

Keep Installer Approval, Product Verification and Insurance Categories Separate

Accurate security terminology matters, particularly on high-value BMWs where an insurer may have specified a particular standard.

Ghost II Verification

TASSA currently lists Autowatch Ghost II as a verified immobiliser. That is a product-verification statement, not an S5/S7 tracker category.

Luke's Installer Status

Luke Wells is TASSA approved and personally carries out Track & Tune installations. Installer approval is separate from the product's own certification or verification.

Thatcham Categories

Thatcham certifies several vehicle-security categories, including tracking-system categories. It also states certification does not itself guarantee insurer recognition.

How BMW Security Installation Works

1. Identify the BMW

Send the model, model year, postcode and any insurer requirement. Registration details can help confirm the exact vehicle where appropriate.

2. Check Current Compatibility

Luke checks the relevant Ghost-family product or alternative system rather than relying on a generic “BMW compatible” assumption.

3. Select the Security Layer

Choose immobilisation, tracking, alarm functionality, camera evidence or a suitable layered package.

4. Mobile Fit & Handover

Luke installs, tests and explains the system at a suitable home, workplace or arranged fitting location.

BMW security FAQs

Questions Before You Book

Does Ghost Immobiliser fit every BMW?

No. Autowatch lists different BMW generations separately and currently shows Ghost-II on many platforms while some newer models are listed for Ghost Pro. Luke checks the exact BMW before confirming the system.

Can BMW M3 and M4 models have Ghost?

Autowatch lists multiple 3 Series/M3 and 4 Series/M4 generations in its compatibility database. Exact model, generation and year still need to be checked before installation.

What about the new BMW M5?

Autowatch currently lists the newer G90/G99 M5 for Ghost Pro, while older 5 Series/M5 generations are listed differently. This is a good example of why a current compatibility check matters.

Can X5, X6 and X7 use the same Ghost product?

Not necessarily. Autowatch currently differentiates pre-facelift and facelift/current generations. For example, newer X5 LCI, X6 LCI and X7 LCI entries are listed for Ghost Pro.

Can I fit a Ghost and an S5 tracker together?

Where compatible, yes. They perform different roles: Ghost provides an additional driver-authorisation/immobilisation layer while an S5 tracker focuses on tracking and driver recognition.

BMW already offers S5 and S7 trackers. Why choose another tracker?

BMW UK does offer its own security tracker products. Track & Tune also offers third-party tracker systems. The right choice depends on the insurer's exact requirement, product features, subscription and customer preference.

Does BMW Digital Key replace aftermarket security?

BMW Digital Key is a vehicle access/start feature on supported models. It does not perform the same role as every aftermarket immobiliser, tracker or alarm. Security should be considered as a set of separate layers.

Will a Ghost installation affect my BMW warranty?

Manufacturer and warranty-provider decisions vary. Luke can explain the installation method for the selected system, but no blanket manufacturer-warranty guarantee should be assumed. Check the applicable BMW warranty terms where required.

Is Ghost II TASSA verified?

Yes. TASSA currently lists Autowatch Ghost II as a verified immobiliser. That is separate from S5/S7 tracking categories and does not guarantee acceptance under every insurance policy.

Do you offer mobile BMW security installation?

Yes. Luke provides mobile fitting across served areas of Greater London, Essex, Kent, Hertfordshire and surrounding South East locations, subject to postcode and availability.
